Choose IELTS for UKVI when your route requires an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). For a degree-level Student application, an eligible university sponsor may assess your English itself and accept standard IELTS Academic. Confirm your course and sponsorship requirements before booking; the price difference alone does not decide which test you need.

What changes between IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI Academic?
The corresponding Academic tests use the same academic preparation: UKVI does not introduce a separate, harder syllabus. The UKVI product adds the security and reporting arrangements needed for its approved immigration use. IDP explains the additional security in its test-selection guide; IELTS describes the UK-specific options on its official UK page.
Keep two choices separate: Academic versus General Training determines the relevant exam content, while UKVI versus standard concerns the approved test product. IELTS Life Skills is a separate Speaking and Listening test, not an Academic test with a different fee.
Do all UK students need IELTS for UKVI?
No. The Student visa English guidance sets B2 for degree-level study or above and B1 below degree level. It also allows Higher Education Providers to assess English themselves for degree-level study. There are other ways to satisfy the requirement, so needing a Student visa does not automatically mean you must book a new SELT.
The precise sponsor provision is in Appendix English Language, EL 8.1–8.2: the degree-level applicant's Higher Education Provider must have a track record of compliance and record its English assessment on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Standard Academic may be accepted within that process; it does not become a SELT.
For a foundation or separate pre-sessional course, ask the provider to confirm the applicable evidence and sponsorship arrangement. Do not transfer advice about direct master's entry to a different route. If a SELT is required, select a product and test location from the Home Office's approved lists.
Three situations to check before booking
- A university confirms that standard Academic meets its direct-degree sponsorship process: follow that confirmation and its exact score conditions. Do not pay for a replacement solely because the existing result lacks “UKVI”.
- Your provider explicitly requires IELTS for UKVI Academic: book that named product and check the approved location. A standard Academic booking with a similar name is not the same product.
- You have an offer but no clear English-evidence instruction: request clarification before paying. Ask about the required test, individual skill scores, validity and the deadline for supplying evidence.
Use this question when contacting admissions: “For my named course and intake, will you assess my English for Student sponsorship using standard IELTS Academic, or do I need IELTS for UKVI Academic? Please confirm the overall and individual skill scores and evidence deadline.” You can ask before a CAS is issued.
What does the India fee difference mean?
IDP India's published fee table lists standard IELTS at ₹19,000 and IELTS on Computer for UKVI at ₹19,250: a ₹250 difference. Check the booking page for your selected product, city and date before paying. These are India figures, not worldwide prices.
The extra ₹250 does not establish that a test meets your course's score requirements or your immigration route. Likewise, a lower price does not make standard Academic unsuitable where the sponsor accepts it. Choose the correct product first and compare the actual available bookings second.
Computer-delivered IELTS is not the same as IELTS Online
Booking a test online, completing a test on a computer and taking the product called IELTS Online are different things. IELTS states that IELTS Online is not accepted for immigration purposes. Do not assume that an at-home Academic booking becomes a UKVI test.
Check the exact product name and the provider's current delivery options against the official SELT requirements where those apply. Avoid relying on the word “online” alone: it does not tell you which approved test you have booked.
Academic, General Training or Life Skills?
The IELTS test-types guide distinguishes Academic, General Training and Life Skills. Academic and General Training share Listening and Speaking, but their Reading and Writing sections differ. Prepare for the module your institution or route specifies.
Life Skills assesses Speaking and Listening at the relevant level for particular immigration purposes. It is not a substitute for four-skill Academic evidence. For work, family or settlement, check the route's own official requirements instead of applying student-course advice.
Does the January 2026 Skilled Worker change affect this choice?
The current Skilled Worker English guidance requires B2 for relevant new applications. It preserves B1 for people who held that visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it. Switching from another route and reusing previous evidence have their own conditions.
This is a separate question from university admission. Verify the route, required level and permitted evidence before deciding whether a new test is necessary. A university accepting a result does not automatically make it appropriate for a work application.

Turn the booking decision into a practice plan
Once the Academic module is confirmed, use Academic preparation for either the standard or UKVI version. Write down your course's overall target and all four skill minimums. Start with the weakest skill rather than treating a strong average as proof that every condition is met.
For a short first exercise, try a cue card with Claire. Listen to your recording once for clear development of the topic and once for repeated pauses. Note one change, then attempt a second response. The public tool records and replays on your device; AI-scored practice is available through the platform account.
Create your account and continue to IELTS Academic Speaking. For a wider routine, use the 30-day Band 7 study plan and IELTS band score guide. If your confirmed module is General Training, use the General Training letter-writing guide.
Common booking questions
Is IELTS for UKVI harder?
The UKVI label adds security and reporting requirements; it is not a separate difficulty level. Match your preparation to Academic or General Training.
Can standard Academic be used when I need a Student visa?
It may be accepted in an eligible degree-level sponsor's English-assessment process. Get confirmation for your course; do not treat standard Academic as an approved SELT.
Does paying the UKVI fee guarantee acceptance?
No. You still need the correct module, valid evidence, required skill scores and all other applicable conditions.
Can I use IELTS Online instead?
Do not substitute IELTS Online for required immigration evidence. Check the exact product and current official booking instructions.
Should I wait for the CAS before asking?
No. Ask the admissions or sponsorship team before booking; the CAS later records the relevant assessment where the sponsor provision applies.
