Use the date printed on your Test Report Form. A One Skill Retake keeps the original test date. Always confirm with the organisation you are applying to.
Does IELTS expire after 2 years?
Strictly, no: an IELTS result has no printed expiry date. The IELTS partners recommend that a result demonstrates your English for a maximum of two years, because language skills fade without use, and that a Test Report Form more than two years old should only be accepted with proof that you have actively maintained or tried to improve your English. See the IELTS guidance for organisations.
In practice almost every government, regulator and university turns that recommendation into a hard rule, so plan on two years. Organisations can still verify an older Test Report Form through the IELTS Results Service, but the IELTS partners say they cannot further investigate TRFs more than three years old.
How old can your IELTS result be? By organisation
Each organisation sets its own limit and measures it from a different moment: the date you apply, the date your application is assessed, or the date your course starts. Every row below was re-read on the organisation's own page on 10 October 2026.
| Organisation / purpose | Maximum age of result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS partners (recommendation to all organisations) | 2 years from the test date; older only with proof you kept using or improving your English | ielts.org |
| UK Visas and Immigration (IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills as a SELT) | Awarded in the 2 years before the date of your application | gov.uk |
| IRCC Canada: Express Entry / permanent residence (IELTS General Training) | Less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and when you submit the PR application | canada.ca |
| IRCC Canada: Post-Graduation Work Permit (IELTS General Training) | Less than 2 years old when you submit the application | canada.ca |
| Australia Home Affairs: skilled visas (Competent, Proficient or Superior English) | Achieved in the 3 years before the visa application, depending on the subclass | immi.homeaffairs.gov.au |
| Australia Home Affairs: Functional English | Achieved in the 12 months before the visa application | immi.homeaffairs.gov.au |
| Australia Home Affairs: Student visa (subclass 500) | Within 2 years before you lodge (Regular Evidence level), or before the decision if requested (Streamlined Evidence level) | immi.homeaffairs.gov.au |
| Immigration New Zealand: Skilled Migrant and other skilled residence visas | No more than 2 years old when you apply; sat in person at a test centre | immigration.govt.nz |
| Ahpra (Australian health practitioner registration, IELTS Academic) | 2 years before you lodge the registration application; older results only in listed cases of continuous practice or study in English | ahpra.gov.au |
| NMC (UK nurses and midwives, IELTS Academic) | Taken in the 2 years before the NMC assesses your complete application | nmc.org.uk |
| GMC (UK doctors, IELTS Academic including UKVI) | Certificate valid for 2 years; it must still be valid when the GMC approves your application, or on the day of PLAB part 1 | gmc-uk.org |
| Imperial College London (admission) | Taken within 2 years of the intended course start date; One Skill Retake not accepted | imperial.ac.uk |
| McMaster University, Canada (undergraduate admission) | Typically written within 2 years of starting; for September 2026 entry, valid when you submit your application | future.mcmaster.ca |

Rules that catch people out
Australia changed its approved tests on 7 August 2025. A result from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 can be used until 6 August 2028 inclusive, depending on the visa, and Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered completely online, such as IELTS Online. See Home Affairs English language requirements.
Canada accepts only IELTS General Training for Express Entry and the PGWP, not IELTS Academic. For a UK visa, only IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills count as a SELT. The NMC and the GMC both want IELTS Academic, and the NMC lets you combine two sittings only if they were within 12 months of each other and both are under two years old when it reviews your application.
How to check your IELTS result online
Results are released through the Test Taker portal using your passport or ID number and candidate number. IELTS on computer and IELTS for UKVI results take 1–5 days and IELTS Online 6–8 days. The British Council emails a link; IDP gives you account access. Details are on the IELTS results page.
How many Test Report Forms do you get?
You receive one Test Report Form per test, on paper or as an eTRF. Your test centre can post results to up to five organisations free of charge, and organisations that prefer it receive them through IELTS Results Service e-delivery; IELTS Online results are shared only that way. If your test centre has closed, ielts.org offers a paid replacement-TRF service for up to two years from the test date, per the IELTS results page. Since 1 January 2023 IRCC no longer needs a hard copy, per IDP Canada.
Does One Skill Retake reset the two-year clock?
No. A One Skill Retake produces a new TRF number, but the date printed at the top is the date of the original four-skill test, and organisations are told to use that date for validity. Retaking one skill improves the score, not the expiry. See the IELTS One Skill Retake verification page.
Frequently asked questions
How long is IELTS valid?+
Two years from the test date for most purposes: UKVI, IRCC, Immigration New Zealand, Ahpra, the NMC, the GMC and most universities use that limit. Australia accepts most skilled-visa scores from the three years before the application.
Does IELTS expire?+
Not formally. There is no expiry date on the Test Report Form, but the IELTS partners recommend a result as evidence for a maximum of two years, and most organisations enforce that as a rule.
How long is IELTS valid for Canada PR?+
Your IELTS General Training result must be less than two years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit the permanent-residence application.
Is IELTS valid for 3 years for Australian PR?+
For Competent, Proficient and Superior English, Home Affairs accepts a score achieved in the three years before the visa application, depending on the subclass. Functional English must be within 12 months, and the Student visa uses two years.
Can I use an IELTS result older than 2 years for university?+
Usually not. The IELTS partners say an older result should only be accepted with proof you have actively maintained your English, and universities such as Imperial count two years back from the course start date.
Does One Skill Retake change my IELTS test date?+
No. The new TRF shows the original four-skill test date, so the validity period does not restart.
Is IELTS valid for 2 years from the test date or the result date?+
From the test date printed on your Test Report Form. UKVI words it as a test awarded in the 2 years before your application, and IRCC counts back from the dates you create your profile and submit your application.
What happens if my IELTS score expires during my Canada Express Entry application?+
IRCC says the result must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you submit the permanent-residence application, and it refuses applications with expired results. Book a new test early if your score is close to two years old.
How long is IELTS valid for UK universities?+
Usually two years, but each university sets the cut-off point. Imperial College London, for example, counts two years back from your course start date, not from when you apply.
