Michigan Tech English requirements at a glance

Scores must be dated within two years of your intended enrolment, and you may submit your best qualifying score within that window.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | Duolingo | PTE Academic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate | 6.5 | 79 (new scale 4.5) | Not accepted | 53 |
| Undergraduate | 6.5 (6.0 speaking and writing) | 79 (new scale 4.5) | 120 | 53 |
Graduate: IELTS 6.5, and no Duolingo
Graduate applicants who are not from an exempt country provide TOEFL, IELTS or PTE: TOEFL 79 before January 2026 or 4.5 from then (test centre, home and paper editions accepted), IELTS 6.5 overall, or PTE 53. Michigan Tech does not accept Duolingo for graduate admission, scores below the minimums are not eligible for review, and there is no provisional or conditional admission for missing English scores. IELTS scores are verified by the office rather than needing to be sent by the testing agency. See the Graduate School FAQ and international applicants.
Waivers are granted automatically based on the exempt-country list, which includes Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa and the UK. India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh are not on it, and if your country is not listed you do not qualify for a waiver. The MBA waives only for citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, and programs with stricter rules may refuse a waiver even for listed countries.

Undergraduate: IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 120
Undergraduates need TOEFL 79 (4.5 from 21 January 2026; code 1464), IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in speaking and writing, SAT EBRW 510, ACT 18 in English and reading, PTE 53 or Duolingo 120; Duolingo is accepted only for international undergraduate admission. Michigan Tech offers no ESL program, and the page says it does not accept English proficiency waivers, though US high school or college study may lead to one after transcripts are reviewed. See undergraduate English requirements.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Michigan Tech sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Michigan Tech Graduate School international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
