What ID do I need for the PTE exam?

For every PTE test the standard ID is a valid, original passport, and it must be the same document you chose when booking. Your name, date of birth, citizenship and gender must match the booking exactly. Copies, digital IDs, temporary documents and IDs issued more than 10 years ago are refused, and if your ID is not accepted you cannot test and lose the fee.

If you don't have your passport

If your passport is with an embassy for a visa application, ask for it back before test day. If it is being renewed or replaced, wait until the new one arrives before booking (ID policy).

PTE Academic: outside your country of citizenship, only a passport is accepted. Inside it, check Pearson's country exceptions list to see whether an alternative ID is allowed; an ID not on that list is refused.

PTE Core: passport (anywhere, preferred) or Canadian Permanent Resident Card (in Canada only). People holding Canadian refugee claimant or immigration documents must complete Pearson's form before booking.

Immigrants, refugees and stateless people without an accepted ID can apply through Pearson's form before booking; Customer Support replies in 3–5 working days.

UK SELT tests (PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home)

A passport works everywhere; in the UK a UK eVisa (View and Prove share code) is also accepted. Alternatives include a UK BRP or BRC (expired cards accepted up to 24 months after expiry or until 31 December 2026, whichever comes first), convention and stateless persons travel documents, EEA identity cards, and outside the UK a photographic national ID in its issuing country. Emergency travel documents are refused (ID policy). See PTE Academic UKVI.

Getting your name right

Enter all given and middle names in "Given name(s)" and your family name in "Surname". If your ID has only one name, put it in "Given name(s)" and type a full stop in "Surname" (account rules).

If your name is too long for the form, or your ID shows a different name from your registration, send Pearson's Customer Support form at least three working days before the test so the centre knows. Otherwise you will not be allowed to test (Pearson help centre).

At check-in Pearson also takes your photo, signature and a palm vein scan, and may copy your ID (security policy).

Frequently asked questions

Can I take PTE with an expired passport?+

No. The ID must be valid on test day, or you are turned away and lose the fee.

Can I use a national ID card instead of a passport for PTE Academic?+

Only where Pearson's country exceptions list allows an alternative ID, and only inside your country of citizenship. A passport is the standard ID.

Can I use a photocopy of my passport for PTE?+

No. Photocopies, scans and digital copies are refused, even if certified.

What if my name on the PTE booking doesn't match my passport?+

Contact Pearson via its Customer Support form at least three working days before the test; an unreported mismatch means you cannot test.

What ID do I need for PTE Core?+

A passport, or a Canadian Permanent Resident Card if you test in Canada.
