Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0, higher for engineering
Direct undergraduate admission needs IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 61 (3.5 new), Duolingo 95 or PTE 44 for general admission; IELTS 6.5 (writing 5.5), TOEFL 80, Duolingo 110 or PTE 53 for engineering; and IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100, Duolingo 130 or PTE 66 for English majors. Only first-language English speakers from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK are exempt. Students who meet UNO's academic standards but not the English requirement can qualify for conditional undergraduate admission. See undergraduate English proficiency.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UNO sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UNO graduate entrance exams page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
