Class 12 English, MOI letters and the Pakistan rule

For undergraduate degrees, Suffolk accepts Indian Standard XII English at 70% from CISCE, CBSE, Maharashtra (01), Gujarat second language (013) and Tamil Nadu boards, or 60% for Gujarat first language (006). For Professional Health degrees, at undergraduate level only, the bar rises to 80% for CISCE and CBSE, 90% for Gujarat (006) and Tamil Nadu, and 92.5% for Maharashtra. Punjab board results are not on the list.

Suffolk may waive the test with a medium of instruction letter from your registrar or controller of examinations if your degree is at least UK bachelor's level and was awarded no more than ten years before the course starts. MOI letters cannot be used for Professional Health courses. Graduates of approved institutions from the last five years may use Suffolk's English Language Test Waiver instead. All applicants from Pakistan, or educated there, must provide an approved English test; MOI letters and waivers are not accepted from them.

Research degrees and the visa

Postgraduate research needs IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 in each component, unless your previous education was in English. Nationals of UKVI majority English-speaking countries are not normally asked for a test, though Suffolk may still ask for evidence.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Suffolk programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
