I'd like to talk about a little wooden bedside table that sits right next to my bed in my flat. It's quite minimalist in design, made of solid light oak with a smooth, natural finish. It has just one small drawer with a brushed brass handle and four slightly tapered legs, giving it a bit of a mid-century look. It's fairly compact, so it doesn't take up much floor space, which is ideal because my bedroom isn't overly spacious.

I actually picked it up about three years ago from a small independent furniture workshop in my hometown. I was moving into my first rented place and needed something sturdy yet understated. When I saw it in the shop window, it immediately caught my eye because of the craftsmanship. It was slightly pricier than flat-pack alternatives, but I thought it was worth the extra investment.

As for what sits on it, there's always a soft bedside lamp with a warm bulb, a coaster for a glass of water, and, crucially, whatever novel I'm currently reading. At the moment, I've got a historical mystery resting on it with a leather bookmark tucked inside. I've developed a strict habit of reading for at least twenty minutes before turning in, so having a dedicated spot to place my book right before I nod off is essential.

To be honest, this small table is really important to me because it anchors my evening routine. It's essentially the last thing I interact with before falling asleep and the first thing I see in the morning. It keeps my bedtime clutter-free and creates a cosy, calm atmosphere, which definitely helps me unwind after a hectic day.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe a bedside table you use in your bedroom"?+

Jot down 2-3 specific visual details (oak wood, brass handle, tapered legs) to make the description vivid.

How long should I speak on an IELTS cue card?+

You get one minute to prepare, then speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

How is the cue card scored?+

Part 2 is not scored on its own. Your whole Speaking test gets one band from four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The cue card is where the examiner hears whether you can keep going for two minutes.

Can I use this sample answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
