Band 8 sample answer

Band 8271 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

A couple of years ago, I decided to spend a long weekend at a small, family-run organic farm nestled in the rolling hills of Somerset. Life in the city had become a bit overwhelming, so a close friend and I booked a short stay in a converted barn on the property to completely switch off.

The farm was quite secluded, surrounded by sprawling meadows, ancient apple orchards, and several acres of vibrant lavender fields. During our stay, we got involved in a few gentle day-to-day routines. In the mornings, we helped the owners collect eggs from the free-range hens and even assisted in bottle-feeding some orphan lambs, which was surprisingly therapeutic. In the afternoons, we simply wandered along the footpaths, picked wild blackberries from the hedgerows, and sat by a small stream reading books.

What made the entire experience so remarkably tranquil was the total absence of urban noise and digital distractions. There was practically no mobile phone reception, which forced us to disconnect from our screens and live in the moment. Instead of the usual rumble of heavy traffic and blaring sirens, the only sounds were the gentle rustle of leaves, birds chirping, and the occasional bleat of a sheep in the distance.

It really gave me a chance to recalibrate. Breathing in the crisp, unpolluted air and taking part in such grounded, wholesome activities made time feel like it had slowed right down. To be honest, leaving that pastoral haven to head back to the hustle and bustle of city life was quite tough, but the peacefulness of those few days stayed with me for a very long time.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe a memorable visit to a rural farm"?+

Jot down the setting and accommodation (e.g. Somerset, converted barn retreat).

How long should I speak on an IELTS cue card?+

You get one minute to prepare, then speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

How is the cue card scored?+

Part 2 is not scored on its own. Your whole Speaking test gets one band from four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The cue card is where the examiner hears whether you can keep going for two minutes.

Can I use this sample answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
