Band 8 sample letter

Band 8187 words. Names and details are invented; write your own.

Dear Mr. Henderson,

I am writing to update you regarding the essay assignment for our History of Modern Architecture class, which was due for submission this coming Monday.

The essay focuses on the structural innovations of the Bauhaus movement and their lasting impact on contemporary urban design. I found the research quite engaging, particularly the section concerning minimalist functionalism.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to complete the final draft as planned. My household experienced a sudden plumbing emergency on Friday evening, which resulted in significant water damage to my study area. Dealing with the cleanup and coordinating with emergency repair services occupied my entire weekend, leaving me no time to focus on my academic work.

I am fully committed to finishing the assignment and would appreciate it if you could grant me a short extension until Wednesday. I have already drafted the core arguments and simply need to finalise the bibliography and proofread the concluding analysis. I will ensure the completed document is uploaded to the student portal by Wednesday evening at the latest.

Thank you for your understanding regarding this unexpected situation.

Yours sincerely,

Julian Thorne

Examiner's view

Why this scores well

The response achieves Band 8 by addressing all three bullet points with specific, natural justifications and maintaining a consistent semi-formal tone throughout. A common Band 6 error is failing to provide a concrete plan for completion or using overly casual language that undermines the professional relationship with the teacher.

  • →Write to someone you know but not closely, such as a manager, landlord or neighbour, using their title and surname.
  • →Polite and friendly at once: a few contractions are fine, slang is not. Close with Yours sincerely or Kind regards.
  • →State the purpose in the first two sentences; small talk costs words you need for the bullets.
