The question

The diagrams below show the water supply system in Australia present and in the future.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Present water supply
  1. 1.Dam/Storage supplies pure water to City (Households, Factories, Shops)
  2. 2.Dam/Storage supplies pure water to Water treatment plant
  3. 3.City sends waste water to Water treatment plant
  4. 4.City sends storm water to River
Future water supply system
  1. 1.Dam/Storage supplies pure water to City (Households, Factories, Shops)
  2. 2.City sends waste water to Water treatment plant
  3. 3.City sends storm water to Water treatment plant
  4. 4.Water treatment plant supplies pure water back to City

Model answer

Band 8 sample answer

Band 8184 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided diagrams illustrate the current water supply infrastructure in Australia and a proposed future model. Overall, the transition from the present to the future system is marked by a shift towards water recycling, as the future design integrates storm water into the treatment process rather than allowing it to flow into the river.

In the present system, pure water is supplied to the city—comprising households, factories, and shops—directly from the dam and storage facilities. Simultaneously, the dam also feeds the water treatment plant. Waste water generated by the city is directed to the treatment plant, while storm water is discharged directly into the river, representing a linear flow of water resources.

Conversely, the future system proposes a more sustainable approach. While the dam continues to supply pure water to the city, the treatment plant's role is expanded. Instead of storm water being lost to the river, it is now diverted to the water treatment plant alongside waste water. Crucially, the treated water is then recycled back to the city, creating a circular system that reduces reliance on the dam and minimizes environmental discharge.

Frequently asked questions

What should the overview say?+

The future system introduces a closed-loop cycle by routing both waste and storm water through a treatment plant, whereas the present system discharges storm water directly into the river.

How many words and how long for IELTS Writing Task 1?+

At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.

How is IELTS Writing Task 1 scored?+

On four criteria: task achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical range and accuracy. A clear overview of the main features is what most separates Band 6 from Band 7 and above.

How do I describe process diagrams?+

Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally. Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
