Model answer

Band 8 sample answer

Band 8183 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided pie charts compare the employment, education, and unemployment status of Australian secondary school graduates across three distinct time points. Overall, it is evident that employment became the most common outcome for graduates by the end of the period, while the percentage of students continuing their education decreased significantly.

In 1980, half of the graduates were engaged in further education, which represented the largest category. At that time, 40% of graduates were employed, while 10% were unemployed. By 1990, the situation shifted; the proportion of employed graduates rose to 50%, overtaking further education, which fell to 38%. Simultaneously, the unemployment rate saw a slight increase to 12%.

By the final period, labeled as Sweden, the trend towards employment continued, reaching a peak of 55%. Conversely, the proportion of graduates in further education saw a marginal decline to 37% compared to the 1990 figure. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate among graduates dropped to 8%, marking the lowest level recorded across the three charts. In summary, the data highlights a clear transition from academic pursuits toward workforce participation among Australian school leavers over these decades.
