Band 8 sample answer

Band 8179 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided charts illustrate changes in household food expenditure and dining habits between 1970 and 2000. Overall, there was a clear shift towards eating out, with fast-food consumption becoming the dominant trend by the end of the period.

In 1970, only 10% of the average family's food budget was spent on restaurant meals. This figure grew steadily to 15% in 1980 and 35% in 1990, eventually reaching 50% by 2000. This indicates that half of the total food expenditure was dedicated to dining out by the turn of the millennium.

Regarding meal frequency, both fast-food and sit-down restaurant meals started at 20 per year in 1970. By 1980, sit-down meals had risen to 34 per year, surpassing fast-food meals, which stood at 28. However, this trend reversed dramatically thereafter. By 1990, fast-food consumption surged to 55 meals per year, while sit-down meals reached 45. This gap widened further by 2000, with fast-food meals climbing to 85 per year, compared to only 49 for sit-down restaurants. Consequently, fast-food became the preferred choice for dining out, significantly outpacing traditional sit-down establishments.
