Tests are on computer; ielts.org puts IELTS on computer and IELTS for UKVI results at 1–5 days, and results go free to up to five organisations by post or to any number by e-delivery.

For a UK Student visa at degree level you need B2: IELTS for UKVI 5.5 in each skill, or a standard IELTS Academic result your university assesses itself. Below degree level, B1 (4.0 each) applies. Canada's Express Entry accepts IELTS General Training (CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill) with a result under two years old; UK universities usually ask 6.0 to 7.0 overall depending on the course.
