For Express Entry, choose PTE Core if you want to take a Pearson test. PTE Academic is not the Pearson option on IRCC's accepted-test list. For university admission, check the institution's requirements: acceptance for study and acceptance for immigration are separate decisions.
Acceptance and score references checked on 18 September 2026. Start with the official IRCC language-test requirements before booking.
PTE Core or PTE Academic: which should you book?
| Your purpose | What to check |
|---|---|
| Express Entry using a Pearson test | PTE Core, with the required level in each skill. |
| University or college admission | The institution's accepted tests and course-specific scores. Do not assume Core replaces Academic. |
| A provincial stream or another immigration route | The named program's current rules, rather than a general claim about all Canadian permanent residence. |
Pearson describes PTE Academic as a test for study and other accepted purposes. That does not make an Academic result interchangeable with a Core result. A high score on the wrong test does not resolve a test-acceptance requirement.
Check the test name before paying
Write the application purpose at the top of your preparation plan. Next, copy the exact accepted test name from the receiving organisation's current requirements. Compare that name with the booking screen and with the practice course you intend to use. This small check is more useful than choosing whichever preparation app appears first in search.
If you are applying to study now and considering immigration later, treat these as two separate requirements to verify. Ask the institution about admission; use the relevant government program page for immigration. Do not assume one test booking covers both plans.
Check the fee, test-centre availability and rescheduling terms in your current booking journey. We do not use a single rupee amount as a worldwide or permanent price.
PTE Core scores for CLB 7, 9 and 10
Use each reported skill score separately. These are the minimum scores for the indicated CLB level, from IRCC's equivalency table.
| CLB target | Listening | Reading | Speaking | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 60 | 60 | 68 | 69 |
| 9 | 82 | 78 | 84 | 88 |
| 10 or above | 89 | 88 | 89 | 90 |
Enter your four scores in the PTE Core to CLB calculator to see each conversion and the gap to your chosen target. The result helps organise practice; it does not decide immigration eligibility.
Worked example: find the skill to practise next
Suppose your Core report shows Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 87. The first three skills reach CLB 9; Writing is CLB 8 and needs one more score point to reach the CLB 9 threshold of 88. Averaging the four numbers would hide that gap. Equally, calling every skill “CLB 8” would hide what you have already achieved.
For this example, start with a writing exercise. Read the task, plan a complete response, check whether every requested point is covered, and review the feedback before repeating. A one-point exam gap does not tell you how many practice sessions you need, and a practice result is not an official Pearson score.
Does CLB 9 guarantee an invitation?
No. CLB 9 can matter for CRS skill-transferability combinations, while first-official-language core points continue increasing at CLB 10. Your outcome also depends on the rest of your profile and the invitation round. Use IRCC's CRS criteria for the applicable points and caps.
Program language minimums also differ. Use the program-specific section on IRCC's language page instead of treating CLB 7 as a universal entry requirement.
Try the right practice before creating an account
Try a PTE Core email exercise and review the available feedback. Then create a BandLadder account to continue Core practice and keep your preparation focused on the skill you need. Free usage limits apply; additional practice and mock-test access depend on your plan.
If you are still choosing between providers, read the IELTS General Training versus PTE Core comparison. If you choose IELTS General Training, use the CLB 7, 9 and 10 study plan for the matching skill targets.
