Is PTE 79 a good score?
IELTS 8.0 describes a very good user. It meets the Superior English level for Australian skilled visas (which is set per skill) and most nursing, medical and law registrations. Because 79 is at the bottom of the 8.0 range, a bad day drops you to IELTS 7.5; treat 82 as the safe target.

IELTS's own table says 7.5, not 8.0
There are two official comparisons. Pearson published its concordance for the enhanced PTE Academic in July 2025; the IELTS Partners publish their own study on ielts.org. They disagree on PTE 79: Pearson maps it to IELTS 8.0, IELTS to 7.5. The gap is widest in writing, where IELTS asks for a much higher PTE score; in speaking it asks for less.
