The rule: no limit and no gap
ielts.org: if you do not get the score you wanted, you can apply to take the test again as soon as you feel ready (ielts.org). The British Council: you can take IELTS as many times as you need, subject to a fee each time (British Council). IDP India: there are no restrictions on retaking IELTS, and you can register as soon as you are ready (IDP India).
ielts.org adds a warning worth taking seriously: your score is unlikely to improve without extra work on your English (ielts.org).
Your three options after a disappointing result
Pick the one that matches the problem. Details for each are in the linked guides.
| Option | When it fits | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Full retake | You need to improve more than one skill, or you need a different test type | Book and pay for a new test; no waiting period |
| One Skill Retake | One skill fell short after an IELTS on computer test | Book within 60 days of the original test, at a participating centre (British Council) |
| Enquiry on Results (re-mark) | You believe a section was marked too low | Apply within six weeks of the test; fee refunded if the band changes |

The exception: IELTS Life Skills
IDP India says a test taker who has passed IELTS Life Skills cannot retake the same level within two years: pass A1 and you cannot sit A1 again for two years, and the same for B1 (IDP India). If you fail Life Skills, the British Council says you retake and pay again until you pass (British Council).
Will a university see my earlier attempts?
The British Council says a new institution only sees the Test Report Form you ask it to share or share yourself (British Council). Each result is separate, so you choose which one to send. Results are recommended for two years from the test date; see IELTS validity.
Booking and results rules are set per country and test centre, and they change. Check the page for the country where you will sit the test. This guide is general information, not official IELTS advice.
