What IELTS score do you need for National Taiwan University?

National Taiwan University (NTU) asks international degree applicants to programmes taught in English for CEFR B2 or above, which it illustrates as IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, TOEIC 785 or GEPT High-Intermediate. Departments can set higher levels. Applicants whose previous degree was taught entirely in English can skip the certificate with a letter from their university.

Departments can ask more

NTU says the language level required by each department or graduate institute may vary and is listed in its Application Requirements for International Degree Students. If you meet the university minimum but not your department's, the committee can reject you, admit you, or make a conditional offer.

Applicants below the minimum can be considered for conditional admission. An English conditional offer stays valid for at most one year, and you must submit a certificate at the designated level before you can enrol. International Sophomore Entry does not offer conditional admission.

Who does not need a certificate

For English-taught programmes you are exempt if your previous degree was from an English-speaking country, if it was taught entirely in English (with a certification from your previous university or high school), or if you are from an English-speaking country on NTU's list.

That list includes the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, the Philippines, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, but not India, Pakistan or Bangladesh. Students from those countries can still use the English-medium degree route.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NTU programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
