Sailing questions with sample answers

1

Have you ever been sailing?

Yes, just once, actually. A friend of mine invited me out on a small yacht along the south coast during the summer holiday. It was surprisingly peaceful once we got away from the shore, although I did feel slightly seasick when the water got choppy.

2

Do a lot of people go sailing in your country?

Not really, no. It is not particularly widespread because most people live quite far inland, and hiring a boat can be rather pricey. You tend to see it mostly in coastal towns or around large lakes during warm weekends.

3

Would you like to learn how to sail a boat?

I would definitely give it a go. I think it would be quite rewarding to master the technical skills, like handling the ropes and reading the wind. Having said that, I reckon it takes years of practice to feel truly confident out at sea.

4

Did you travel on boats when you were a child?

Occasionally, yes. Whenever we went on family holidays to the seaside, my parents would book a short ferry trip or a scenic harbour cruise. I remember being fascinated by the engine noise and the cold spray coming off the bow.

5

Do you think sailing is an expensive hobby?

To be honest, yes, it generally has a reputation for being quite costly. Maintaining a vessel, paying marina fees, and buying proper safety gear adds up quickly. I suppose joining a local club makes it slightly more affordable for beginners, though.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
