Band 8 sample answer

Band 8188 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided tables illustrate the consumption and production of potatoes across five distinct regions of the world in 2006. Overall, it is evident that Europe and Asia were the primary producers, while Europe also stood out as the region with the highest individual consumption rate.

Regarding production, Asia led the world with 131.2 million tonnes, closely followed by Europe at 126.3 million tonnes. In contrast, the remaining regions produced significantly lower quantities, with North America generating 24.7 million tonnes, Africa 16.4 million tonnes, and South and Central America producing the least at 15.6 million tonnes.

In terms of consumption per person, Europe recorded the highest figure at 96.1 kg, which was substantially higher than the 57.9 kg consumed in North America. Asia, despite being the largest producer, had a relatively modest per capita consumption of 25.8 kg. South and Central America followed with 23.6 kg per person, while Africa recorded the lowest consumption rate at 14.1 kg per person. These figures highlight a clear disparity between the high production volumes in Asia and Europe compared to the more limited output and consumption levels in the other three regions.
