Band 8 sample answer

Band 8191 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The table compares the percentage of monthly household income allocated to four distinct categories—food and drink, housing, clothing, and entertainment—across five European countries: France, Germany, the UK, Turkey, and Spain.

Overall, housing and food and drink account for the highest proportions of expenditure in all countries. While the UK and Germany allocate the largest shares of their income to housing, Turkey and Spain spend the most on food and drink.

Regarding housing, the UK records the highest figure at 37%, followed closely by Germany at 33% and France at 31%. In contrast, Turkey and Spain spend significantly less on accommodation, at 20% and 18% respectively. Conversely, Turkey leads in food and drink expenditure, with households spending 36% of their income, followed by Spain at 31%. The UK, France, and Germany spend lower proportions on this category, ranging from 22% to 27%.

In terms of the remaining categories, Germany allocates the most to both clothing (15%) and entertainment (19%). France also shows a notable interest in entertainment at 13%. Meanwhile, clothing expenditure is lowest in France and Spain, at 7% and 8% respectively, while entertainment spending is lowest in Turkey at 10%.
