You can start PTE preparation free by combining official format guidance, a small number of scored attempts and careful review. First distinguish free learning material from free AI scoring and a free full mock. Each can be useful, but they are different offers.

Free preparation options: what is actually stated?
BandLadder: a daily feedback allowance
The standard free PTE allowance is five Speaking and two Writing question-practice AI evaluations per day. It resets at midnight India time; no card is required and these daily allowances do not expire. Promotional trial access may differ. Choose Academic or Core before starting. Full-mock access is a separate entitlement; the daily allowance is not a promise of an unlimited free scored mock.
The platform has a 25k+ PTE question library, with a separate 30k+ IELTS question library. Paid self-paced plans include extended platform access, AI feedback, mocks, sectional practice, study material and prediction resources for the selected duration. Check Academic or Core pricing and scope before upgrading.
Pearson: official resources and diagnostic tests
Pearson's Academic preparation page and Core preparation page provide routes to free Smart Prep resources. Separately, its September 2026 AI Practice announcement offers two free diagnostic tests. Additional paid activities are separate from those free diagnostics.
Alfa PTE: limited scoring and trial mocks
The Alfa PTE FAQ states five daily AI checks for Speaking, Reading and Listening except Summarize Spoken Text; three one-time checks cover Writing and Summarize Spoken Text. It also lists one free full mock and one sectional mock with scoring. Confirm the allowance for your selected exam.
Gurully: one free PTE mock and limited question scoring
Gurully states one free PTE mock. Its free-user table lists five Speaking AI tokens per day and three Writing tokens once. Those Writing tokens should not be read as a daily reset. Paid benefits apply to the selected product.
APEUni: inspect the current account offer
APEUni advertises AI practice and study tools. Check its current signup or account offer for free scoring and mock limits. We have not assigned it a numerical free allowance from old help articles. That uncertainty does not mean it has no free resources.
A 30-minute free study routine
- Five minutes: read the official instructions for one task and identify what the response must contain.
- Ten minutes: attempt two relevant questions. Save one evaluation for the task where feedback will be most useful.
- Ten minutes: compare your response with the question, model material and feedback. Identify one content or language error and revise it.
- Five minutes: attempt a fresh example that uses the same skill. Keep a short note of the improvement and tomorrow's task.
This is a suggested routine, not a timed mock or an official test format. Spread practice across Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening over the week. Use full-test familiarisation when you have enough uninterrupted time; a few question attempts do not reproduce a complete exam.
Try an original Core-style email planning exercise
Your evening language class has moved to a time that clashes with work. Plan an email to the course organiser explaining the problem, requesting another class and asking how to transfer. Write three bullet points before reading the example. This short planning exercise does not submit an answer or generate an AI score.
Reveal a useful plan and opening
Cover all three purposes: the new time conflicts with your shift; you would prefer a later class or an available weekend group; you need the transfer steps and any deadline. A suitable opening is: “Dear Course Organiser, I am writing about the new timetable for my evening language class. The revised start time overlaps with my work shift, so I would like to ask about transferring to another group.” Complete the request and next-step question in your own words.
Academic learners can instead use the chart-description feedback exercise. These are different tasks, so keep your exam selected when continuing into the platform.
Use free scoring where it tells you something new
Before spending an evaluation, check that a recording is audible or a written response actually answers the prompt. After receiving feedback, fix a specific issue before submitting again. Repeatedly pressing “evaluate” without changing your approach uses credits without much learning.
AI practice scores help organise preparation; they are estimates rather than official Pearson results. Prediction resources can supply extra prompts, but no provider can guarantee that those prompts will appear in your test. Learn a response method that still works when the question changes.
When is paid access worth considering?
Consider it when you consistently use the free allowance, need more relevant practice or require included mock and sectional access. Check the total cost, currency, duration, exam and support scope. You do not need to buy simply because an article calls one provider “best.” Use the current platform comparison and trial checklist to make the decision from your own attempt.
