Before paying for a PTE platform, complete one relevant task and decide whether its feedback helps you improve the next attempt. A free trial is most useful when you test the whole sequence: choose the right exam, submit work, inspect the result and make a specific revision.
Reviewed 20 September 2026. Published by BandLadder. This is a practical testing worksheet, not a ranking or scoring benchmark. For the current provider overview, use our PTE platform comparison. The examples below are original teaching examples, not actual student results or outputs from a named scoring system.
1. Check the exam and your immediate task
Write down Academic or Core and the task you want to improve. Open the practice menu and confirm it remains on that exam after registration. Choose a weak area, rather than a familiar task that makes the trial feel easy. Academic Write Essay and Core Write Email require different responses. Pearson's Academic and Core format guides let you check the expected task.
2. Check the allowance before submitting
Find out whether “free” means free questions, a scored attempt, a one-time mock or a daily allowance. Record the reset time and whether a retry consumes another credit. At BandLadder the standard free PTE question-practice allowance is five Speaking and two Writing AI evaluations daily, resetting at midnight India time, without a card. Promotional access can differ. This is separate from full-mock availability.
Do not infer unlimited free evaluation from a large library. BandLadder's 25k+ PTE questions and separate 30k+ IELTS questions describe the libraries; current access depends on the exam and plan. Check the current PTE plan before purchasing.
3. Test on the device you will use
- On a phone, check that the prompt, record/submit control and time remaining are usable without accidental navigation.
- On a laptop, test your microphone, headphones and normal browser before a timed attempt.
- Play back a recording and check that the voice is audible. A silent recording cannot tell you whether pronunciation feedback is useful.
- Check whether the result opens reliably and whether you can find the same attempt later.
- If a submission fails, note whether the answer is preserved and whether a retry is explained. Do not deliberately disconnect during an important attempt.
4. Compare feedback using this original example
A practice chart shows bus use increasing from 30% in 2020 to 45% in 2025, while car use falls from 50% to 40%. A learner says: “The chart is about transport. Bus is popular. Everything increases.” Which comment is more useful?
- Comment A: “Improve content and fluency. Practise more.”
- Comment B: “Your final statement contradicts the car trend. State that bus use rose by 15 percentage points while car use fell by 10. Practise those two contrasts in connected sentences.”
Compare the feedback and try a revision
Comment B identifies a checkable error and a specific next action. An improved content summary is: “The chart compares bus and car use in 2020 and 2025. Bus use rose from 30% to 45%, while car use fell from 50% to 40%. Car use was higher initially, but buses led in 2025.” This written example cannot establish pronunciation, fluency or a PTE score; those require the spoken response and relevant assessment.
When you inspect real feedback, check that it quotes or locates something you actually said or wrote. A recommendation can sound detailed and still refer to the wrong response. Follow the comment back to your recording, text or the original question.
5. Retest one change, then try an unfamiliar question
Record the same description again after correcting the contrast. Keep the microphone and environment similar. Listen for the factual correction and smoother delivery. Then try another chart: improvement that transfers to new material is more useful than memorising one polished answer.
A higher practice score can be encouraging, but one changed number does not establish readiness. Compare several tasks and the feedback behind them. AI scoring on a preparation platform is a practice estimate; it is not your official test result. Prediction files can supply extra practice, but should not replace unfamiliar tasks.
A comparison record you can copy
| Check | Record from your trial |
|---|---|
| Exam and task | Exact version and question type |
| Free access | Attempts, reset time, expiry and scoring included |
| Device | Recording, playback, timer and result usability |
| Useful feedback | One accurate observation about your response |
| Next attempt | One change you applied and what improved |
| Purchase terms | Total currency amount, duration, included exam and renewal rules |
6. Decide what you need to buy
Choose access long enough for the days you will actually study. Check whether the plan provides AI feedback, human reviews or both. A support chat is not automatically a lesson or an examiner review. If you cannot understand the feedback, ask for clarification before committing to a longer duration.
BandLadder's paid self-paced offering includes AI feedback, mocks, sectional practice, study material and prediction resources during the selected access period. Compare the actual service with your needs; question counts alone cannot answer that question. Start with the free preparation routine or follow the BandLadder PTE practice workflow.
