Band 8 sample answer

Band 8272 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

I’d like to talk about my neighbour, Arthur, who is a retired secondary school teacher living just down the road from me. Despite being well into his seventies, he has far more energy than people half his age, and he genuinely devotes almost all his spare hours to helping others across our local area.

Rather than putting his feet up after leaving work, Arthur throws himself into various community projects. For instance, he looks after a neglected patch of land behind our street, turning it into a thriving allotment where families can grow vegetables. On top of that, he runs a weekend workshop in his garden shed where he repairs broken bicycles for neighbourhood children free of charge. Whenever an elderly resident needs someone to pick up their prescriptions or do a bit of DIY, Arthur is always the first person to step in.

I think he chooses to spend his time this way because he firmly believes in looking out for your neighbours. He once mentioned to me that staying active within the community keeps his mind sharp and gives him a real sense of purpose. He honestly doesn’t see his efforts as a sacrifice; to him, it’s just how a healthy neighbourhood ought to function.

To be honest, I find his selflessness incredibly inspiring. In a world where most of us are constantly glued to our mobile phones or complaining about being too busy, Arthur shows that making time for others is simply a choice. Seeing how much warmth and goodwill he creates around our street genuinely makes me want to be far more thoughtful with my own daily routine.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe someone very generous with their time"?+

Identify the person, your relationship to them, and their life stage.

How long should I speak on an IELTS cue card?+

You get one minute to prepare, then speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

How is the cue card scored?+

Part 2 is not scored on its own. Your whole Speaking test gets one band from four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The cue card is where the examiner hears whether you can keep going for two minutes.

Can I use this sample answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
